Love Thy Neighbor
I’m going off subject a bit today with my blog. I wanted to write about the young man gunned down in Florida by a man acting as a neighborhood watch captain.
I listened to the many news reports and still couldn’t wrap my mind around a person killing someone for looking suspicious wearing a hoodie and walking through a dark street in a gated community.
After watching the TV programs showing video of the man responsible for the shooting walking into the police station minutes afterward, I couldn’t see any bloody damage to the man’s nose, or head as he claimed.
The news reports stated the young man fought with his assailant. If he did, I believe that was understandable in trying to get away. When the assailant called 911 to report a suspicious looking person on the street, the police told him to back off because a patrol car was on route. The assailant ignored the warning and kept on following the young man.
The Sentinel Newspaper in Florida asked an expert in voice recognition to evaluate the 911 call made by the assailant. The voice expert also used the screams for help heard from a neighbor’s phone while they called 911 after hearing the disturbance outside their home.
The assailant claimed he was the one screaming for help, but the expert checking the voices stated it was the victim’s voice calling for help.
It makes a person wonder what our future holds when injustices like this happen. My heart goes out to the young man’s parents. Their pain must be horrific in losing their young son, not yet a man.
I’m wondering what is happening in our society. When did it become the norm to attack another human being and take his or her life over looking suspicious? I don’t see the reasoning behind such actions. To make the situation worse, the police haven’t arrested anyone yet over the shooting. I’m hopeful law enforcement and the court finds the right answers.
If any of you have followed the story, how do you feel about what took place on the dark street in Florida? Was the neighborhood watch person within his rights to gun the young man down? Violence in our society has become an every day occurrence and I feel we must do something to stop it.

I'm just wondering what our society is coming to. There's so much violene in the world that it scares a person.
I think it might just be the media coverage, Mary Suzanne. From what I understand - unless things have changed - violent crime rates have actually been dropping for several years. That's a good thing.
I think you're right about the media coverage wanting to put a sensational story out there to garner a bigger market of the viewing audience.
There's one tv station in our area that puts out a special (once a week) about a person or company doing something positive for someone. Their reasoning for the programming is to uplift their audience.
In the Midwest, all you read about are the crime rates in the larger cities. Some of the cities are close to where I live. Mostly, murders. I'm not sure if the crime rate is dropping much where I'm located.
There are so many conflicting reports on this story. I don't think everything is out yet. It's a shame that someone died. The after actions are what is concerning to me. Busloads of people are leaving Atlanta almost daily to protest. I'm sure this isn't the only place but that's where I live so I see it. These citizens are going down half cocked and ready for riots and that is always concerning. I hope our nation makes it through this without more loss of life.

I'm hoping that what happened in Florida will be settled in court. I believe this is the only way to ward off riots and more killings.
In a city near us, there are usually drive bys and senseless shootings every day.
Now, a lot of the reports on tv are dealing with kids roamng the streets and playing a game called knockout. One man was killed and several other innocents were seriously injured when they were beaten for fun. It makes me sick to watch this kind of news.
Let's hope things soon change for the better.
