Con season is in full swing but with the economy still struggling and so many people trying to make ends meet authors and readers have to pick and choose which events they want to spend their hard earned money on.
There are a ton of events that take place each year throughout the US and abroad and narrowing them down to a list of three or four must attend cons is a hard and sometimes impossible task. I try to vary my schedule though several cons hold my attention year after year. With my day job being dissolved in less than a month I am really having to be inventive with my con spending. Trying to get the most bang out of my buck without going overboard.
I'm doing all i can to save on promo materials, travel expenses, lodging, ticket costs, etc... and looking for venues where making a bit of cash is a possibility. I can't afford to go to an event and dig myself into a giant hole of debt so that cuts several of the possibilities off my list.
The really big ticket costs of cons that seem to be more about the party then any educational or promotional value have been scratched off my list. I can party closer to home for a fourth of what those trips would cost me, maybe less.
I'm looking for opportunities that focus on what I write, and what i like to read and offer me a chance to improve and make connections. So far two events fit that profile and are on my must attend list.
GCLS and the first annual EAA convention.
For those of you that enjoy reading quality lesbian stories or writing them and aren't familiar with GCLS... First i have to wonder why NOT??? GCLS (Golden Crown Literary Society) is the group to be a part of if you have any type of interest or association with lesbian literature. They hold a convention once a year with some of the top names in les lit in attendance, plus they are classes, readings, fun get togethers, an author auction I've heard rumors about, LOL and the events culminates with the Goldie Awards. If money holds out I'll definitely be there in Orlando in June for this one. I went last year and I stayed high on the estrogen for months afterwards.

The second event on my must do list is the first annual EAA conference in LAs Vegas this coming September. I'm actually on the advisory committee for this one. Kathleen Bradean just recently took over the reigns of the EAA (Erotic Author's Association) and she has some amazing stuff planned for the first con. For more details, dates and to get your tickets before they are gone check out the Sex in Sin City con info at:

I'm also looking at a few local events that i do every year that don't break the bank since they are close by. Here's my question for everyone. What cons have you attended so far this year or plan to attend? Any specific authors/genres you want to meet or see represented?

If money were no object, I'd do Saints & Sinners in New Orleans, Gay RomLit (also in New Orleans in October), the EAA, and every single Pride I could get to.
As it is, I'll be at Gay Days in Orlando in June, and probably Gay RomLit. And the Roanokoe VA and North Carolina Prides in September.
We'll keep an eye out for you next year, Vincent.
I've never been to a conference, though I'd love to. Money reasons, but if money were no object, I honestly don't know what I'd attend. In order to limit the want factor I admit to not even looking around at the various options.
Probably should for one day! :)
Hi Beth,
I have the added problem of living in Australia. So there's only one Con I go to and that's GCLS. I have to save all year to get to that one, with plane fares alone being close to $2,000.
If money were no object, I'd also like to attend Saints and Sinners, and Provincetown, at least once.
Interesting topic.
Erica Lawson.
We didn't get to any cons last year or so far this year, but EAA is on our list for sure - I'm thrilled you're headed there, maybe we'll finally get to meet!

I'll only be attending Romanticon (Ellora's Cave) in Akron this year. I've attended it the last 2 years and had a blast. Since it's only 2 hours from my home I can drive to it. I share a room and spend my money on books. Our group will take food and drink so we don't have to go to the bar at night. Breakfast and dinner are part of the conference price. I wish I could do more conferences but money isn't always available to do all the ones I want to do.
For me it's cons that accept me as a guest. And mostly close to home though I a,ways try to stretch out to a con I never been to before and get both my names out. These are science fiction/fantasy/horror conven tions. though this year did do EPICon 2011 in Williamsburg since that is a writer's conferwence for e-publishing.
Last convention for me that I have tos tay at a hotel will be Concarolinas in North Carloina.
Next year, two cons I was a guest at this year asked me already. I will see if can stay with Concarolinas next year as I have my RWA chapter's writer's conference in Virginia Beach and I am helping with the YA track on Saturday. And conferences unlike conventions as a guest, you do pay to attend.
I plan to be with Beth at EAA Con and on a few panels hopefully. It's important to do these things and make them work for you, by having publishers pick up the tab for stuff, doing SMART promo, and continuing to build your audience. Looking forward to meeting you beth!
I'll also be at westercon, DragonCon, Cybernet Expo(YNOT Summit) and IPCPR. That's just this year. NExt year, looking at RT and RWA both, plus the above-mentioned.
I have yet to attend a con but I want to if for no other reason to interact with other writers. I have so many great friends online but I want to interact face to face and learn more and see more and.....lots more!
I'm with you, Beth, about the educational value of a conference. I enjoy a good party, too, but I wouldn't be interested in spending money in travel, food and lodging, not to mention alcohol, for parties alone.
I've been attending Saints and Sinners, in New Orleans, for the past few years and will be attending again next month! S&S is a really good party, make no mistake, but it's so much more than that, too.
I'm also on the planning committee for the EAA Sex in Sin City conference and am currently putting together the panels, classes and readings. It's all about writing and way more than a party. Actually, there's only one party scheduled, and that's at the close.
Those are the only two I'll be attending this year. I really hope to get a chance to see and meet everyone there!
As a full-time article writer, I can afford to attend conventions. (If I had to depend on erotica money, I wouldn't attend very many of them.) I won't be at Saints and Sinners because it's too close to my trip to Thailand. I will be at the EAA convention.
