Authors Do More than Just Write

Writing is a difficult job. Generating ideas, identifying character motivations and goals, mapping out the obstacles and roadblocks that prevent the character goals, and developing a credible and powerful "villain" in a story is hard work.

On occasion, in order to get through the steps required to create a great story, authors find other ways of distracting themselves from the noise going on in their head. The things they do vary. Some knit, some crochet, some exercise, some shop, some design jewelry, some work on jigsaw puzzles, some read books on the writing craft, and some do a combination of all of the above. Me, I tend to cook and sew. I like jigsaw puzzles, and crocheting, and knitting, and reading books on the writing craft, but I derive the most satisfaction from cooking and sewing when I'm trying to work through a story.

Recently, I've had more "working through" time than actual "writing" time and as a result I've spent a great deal of that time reacquainting myself with my sewing machine. I have to admit that the focus on following pattern instructions and piecing things together has helped me with some ideas that have been wandering around in my head. For fun I've shared images of the handbags and tote bags I've made with people on Facebook and who read my blog.

Even better, I've discovered some people would be interested in actually purchasing the items I've made, so, it looks like my brainstorming activities can be both productive and profitable.

Who'da thunk it? LOL.

It's been a win-win situation for me. Make handbags, find buyers for handbags, and get a story developed and plotted all at the same time. Yup, looks like things are looking up.

Next on my list of things to do or make -- Do: plot out another novella and a novel. Make: Victorian/Steam Punk corset and matching skirt and jacket. (Now that's a challenge I'm looking forward to -- both the Do and the Make that is!!)

What a neat idea! These are really quite stunning - no wonder peeps are interested in buying some. And it's so true - working on something radically different from writing provides time for the ideas and characters to noodle on their own.

Can't wait to see how the Victorian/ Steam Punk corset turns out!

Thanks Adriana,

I'm hoping the corset comes out the way I've pictured it, but I have a few supplies I need to purchase first. Like steel boning (none of that wimpy plastic crap for me!)

I'll post pictures once I get it all done.

Qwillia,

I love the tote bag and handbag. Besides writing, you're very gifted in designing things. Keep at it and you could have a lucrative sideline outside your writing career.

Thank you Mary, I've been checking out Etsy so I may be selling the bags through them.

I love it, these are gorgeous! I want to make some now if I can find a pattern.

Great post, and neat to find another author's distraction techniques. I think it's the only way some of us stay relatively sane.

I tried to post this the other day but Google wasn't letting me sign in.

I love your bags! And as a woman with a slight purse/bag/container fetish that's saying a lot. You have skills girl! Love the pictures you shared.
