Where's the line with Alpha males?

Every one loves a good Alpha male, right? Well I do anyway. But what do you do when your alpha gets to protective of your female character. Recently I read a good book, but personally felt the main male character, was a bit to Alpha. You know he was seriously over protective of the main female character. I began to wonder where do writers draw the line on their manly men? How do you balance writing a good strong guy without being over bearing and perhaps even a little abusive? Because lets face it, if your MC is a jerk no one will want to rad your book. Yet some women, me included, love to read about your big strong guy, but he can't be to strong or to protective and he's gotta give the strong female character room to be herself yet he's still gotta he ready to offer a shoulder to cry on but can't get to sappy...etc. Of course there are no read guys like this, or if you find one he's a diamond in the rough. Right? Then again that's why we write fiction. Still how do we shove all this into one character and yet he still needs a flaw or two to make him real. Usually we don't, we make the characters real as we can and as appealing as we can. But you still have to walk that line, keeping him strong, protective, etc but not too much so to be a jerk.

What do you think? Have you read any books where the guy was so alpha he was just a jerk?

I definitely write strong, alpha male characters because that's what I like to read. But how alpha is too alpha? I think it depends on the subgenre of the romance as well as the specific plot. A hyper alpha male would seem like a jerk in a contemporary maintstream romance, while in a BDSM erotic romance, it would be expected. And alpha is one thing...mean is another. I've read a few romances where the main character did something mean and it was a turnoff.
