Groundhog Day: modern holiday based on old traditions?

Today as most of you know is Groundhog Day, but are any of you familiar with the holiday known as Imbolc which traditionally took place at this time of year?

This holiday involved predicting the weather (perhaps a precursor to Groundhog Day?) and celebrated the hearth and home, as well as cheering on the oncoming spring.

Here's a good link explaining the ancient holiday further: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imbolg

How do you feel about the spring equinox? Are you looking forward to the warmer weather and sun? Or if you're in the southern hemisphere, how do you feel about the approach of fall?

Great post - I'm sure Imbolc IS a precursor to Groundhog Day. So many of the holidays the modern world observes are based on the solstices, equinoxes and cross-quarters of the pagan calendar: Christmas, Groundhog Day, Easter, May Day, and Halloween, for starters. I like to think of it as a sneaky way ancient practices keep everyone in line even if they think they're not following them!
