Opposites attract?

(Photo courtesy of The Daily Squee)

Lately, I've noticed a trend in my own writing. While not every story features this theme, several things I've written in the past year have featured the theme of opposites attracting.

For example, in The Carpenter and the Fairy, a carpenter and former Marine meets a baker who has a fondness for eyeliner (which wouldn't be at all noteworthy, except they're both guys). In Fantasies: Christmas, a buttoned-down business type falls for a tattoo and piercing artist. Both couples have to deal with the trials of being completely different, but love conquers all. :)

I love to read stories in which geeks get jocks, a rich guy falls for a poor one, or the girl hired as a companion to an heiress ends up with the duke. There's something appealing about two people finding a way to get past their differences in order to find love.

Another theme I seem to be reading--and loving--a lot lately is friends to lovers. I love the thought of the perfect person being right under the hero (or heroine's) nose.

What themes are you loving right now? Any new-to-you themes you'd like to try in 2010?
