The Reality of XXX Sex Scenes

By A.J. Llewellyn

I read and I write a lot of erotic and romantic fiction. I watch a lot of gay porn to keep up with what's current and hot to keep my books current. I've learned that what turns gay men on doesn't always turn on women readers and let's face it, M/M readers are mostly women.
So, I go with my gut. I stick with the more romantic sex scenes and I like a little kink on the side.
You won't however, find fisting, double fists, arms shoved up asses up to the elbow, feces, water sports, vomiting or any of that stuff in my books. It does not turn ME on and I can't imagine I'd do it justice in a romance novel.
Recently I read an excerpt from an M/M author whose male character was chained up, his arms above his head. The scene went on and on and on and I started to worry about his breathing.
In reality, keeping somebody's arms up like that for a long time becomes quite painful.
I know, because we recently shot a similar scene for my book/movie tie-in "Bad Cops" and I noticed the director John Bruno was concerned for the model's comfort and safety.
The model let him know when he wanted to be released.
What has struck me recently is how different a porn movie looks on screen to what happens when it's actually made.
I addressed this issue in my book "A Vampire in Waikiki" but in a humorous way. I was on the set of a gay porn movie at the time and the lead actor was gay-for-pay and having a hard time getting hard.
A woman on the set 'fluffed' him, as in, gave him a blow job, but he panicked, afraid a shot of this would be leaked out and his girlfriend would go mad.
I thought this was funny. He's allowed to suck, fuck and get fucked by other guys but not a woman. He ended up getting hard by watching straight porn.
I was surprised to learn many actual gay porn performers enjoy watching straight porn. Francesco D'Macho shot a vid for his staghomme site and he started the scene watching a straight sex vid.
I gave this touch to Divine "Jimmy" Thunder in one of my Waikiki Vampire stories.
What most authors who write gay sex scenes (and may never have seen actual gay sex) don't know is what goes into making those hot scenes...well, hot.
I recently had dinner with a friend who was shooting a three way scene the next day. He drank water and grilled the waiter about his soup. He was worried about beans in case they made him fart on the set or made his butt smelly.
He went home and gave himself enemas and anal douches.
Steve Cruz is one of the few gay porn stars who discusses openly traveling with a portable douche kit and has blogged about getting ready for such scenes.
By the time guys shoot their fucking scenes they're starving and empty. So if they're turning you on, you know that's some fine-ass acting!
I've also learned now that I am involved with my own porn/erotica with Massive Studios running webisodes of my books "Bad Cops" and "Laid" that a lot goes into those endless 'cum shots'.
There was a guy who came for a scene and got hard but couldn't 'shoot.'
It was difficult for his scene partner and for the crew who were loving and coaxing and yet, needed that money shot.
He confessed he'd fucked his girlfriend that morning and couldn't come again so soon.
That's another thing. Porn stars, real porn stars know to save it up for the big moment.
I could go on. Porn is closer to mainstream movies than you think.
The scenes look hot and when well done there's a lot of romance, genuine connectedness etc. but the reality is - just ask Matthew Rush who blogged about his experience on one movie - you can get a guy who is not professional who shows up with a dirty, poopy ass and expects you to bury your face in it.
Rick R. Reed once blogged - eloquently - on the reality of rimming.
Do romance writers use any of this stuff in their books? No.
Do readers want to read it? I don't think so.
They want the fun, the romance and the drama that goes along with hot sex, gay or straight.
I just think it's worth knowing as a writer the reality of all that fucking.

Aloha oe,

A.J.

Thank You!!!! not may people are that open about what goes on to make porn.. I am not naive enough to think that its easy or that there are sacrifices to be made. I am one of the few people though who kinda all ready knew somethings but you did fill in a few blanks for me.. thanks *winks and blows kisses* your right though most woman just want the sex and the romance and not the dirty little things that go with it sometimes. we want HEA's without being reminded of what real life really like. (for those who dont know what an HEA is Happily ever afters)

Aloha oe to you too AJ

Hi AJ. You're my hero, I know of know one else who is having porn films made of their books, you ROCK!

Yes! I totally agree, and it just isn't m/m that suffers from a paucity of reality but ALL romance. Dude, nobody washed back in the day. They had lice, they were rancid, and they didn't shave. But everytime I pick up a book set in the 15th century all those italian noblemen or pirates or whatever are getting themselves next to gorgeous young virgins (Who are beatiful, clean and have sweet breath) and diving right in. And sure, they hit it out of the park on the first try, every time, and nobody ever says "ouch".

I think it's true that no one who reads romance really wants reality. Or, at least I don't. ;-)

Great Post!

LOL, i think ZA hit it right on. I think about that every time i write or read, i am secretly saying "Yeah Right, this is what i believed when i was a 12 year old virign too" Of course reality is no fun, that's why most people read.

Z.A. I am such a fan, thanks for stopping by. Thank you for your insightful comments and you are 100% correct!
Courtney, I loved the comment about 12-year old virgins. You are right!

Jeeezzzz, I must be one of the odd ones because I always wonder how they can go at it without preparation....I mean I can understand in the historicals, but contemporaries??? Not a chance and if they are that "dirty" who would really want something to do with them?

I read a book where it was a multi menage scenario and even there they talked of the preparation the females would undergo to be "ready" for their males. The idea of rimming or any of the other without it is slightly nauseating.... so I think I would have a good idea of the prep required to do a good "scene". Thanks for the further enlightenment as it proves my point that for it to be real,it has to read realistic.

Hey AJ,

You know I have been reading M/M for a few years now an although I am not totlly ingorant to the unmentiables I will admit that I was not aware of anal douches!! (I googled it)I know I know, I think it was a case of rose tinted glasses!!

The term douche bag has a whole new meaning!

Nice blog and thanks for opening my eyes, I think!

I just realized i sounded kinda conceded and i didn't mean too.. i have over the years talked to and met porn stars. i didn't grow up knowing porn was wrong.. i was stealing my grandfathers stash at 10yrs old. i didn't know people didn't approve of homosexuality till high school and i was living in a foster home. my sense of morals and right and wrong weren't normal nor did my mother shelter me from much.. i don't know everything.. Hell i learned something i didn't know from this blog today.. i just got to thinking that i sounded like a lil miss know it all.

I'm not sure how getting ready to have sex m/m style is that much different from m/f - good lord, back in the day, if you can a new sex partner, you made sure you douched, cleaned, shaved your legs, waxed whatever hair you had and didn't want, and made sure everything "down there" was nice and pretty.
***
And watch what you eat? You bet, men aren't the only ones that worry about farting....not me, never me...but other women, yeah.
***
Anyway, real live is not romance and I don't think readers want to know any of that stuff. I know I try not to think about it, but dang it, if I do, I can't stop laughing at the way the scene might really play out between two guys who are basically "guys".
***
But I do recommend watching gay porn, just cuz it's hot, but sex is still sex...and just like really good porn, gay or straight, it's not the money shot, or the duration of the hard on, it's the emotion between lovers.

i like some amount of realism, and also have no problem with fisting, rougher sex, and getting turned on by natural, sometimes funky smells. i think it lends versimilitude if occasionally a character farts during sex - and if they laugh about it, it endears them to me. i like variety in my characters just as i like variety in my friends.

that's why the "money shot" in gay porn annoys and bores me. yeah, some men like to cream all over their lovers, and some men like to get facials. but not all, for heaven's sakes! there is too much sameness in gay porn, and not enough emotion (which is why i like d'macho et al; they're changing that).

i don't want my erotica white-washed, but i also don't want it totally gross, ya know? i like it best when it's slightly idealized, but still so close to reality that it doesn't break my suspension of disbelief.

looking forward to your porn ouevre, AJ!

Thanks for the second comment Silver...I did not think you sounded conceited at all. You're awesome!
Lynn, sex is sex, yes, but I still think any author who writes M/M should watch at least SOME gay porn.
Piranha - I won't be whitewashing my erotica anytime soon!

This has definitely been a very enlightening post for me. As a reader, I never really concede to thinking the real life versions vs the romanticized "cleaned up" versions in books...in fact I think I would actually like to read books where maybe the more real aspects were spelled out a bit more...I would find it very interesting!

Happy Reading!!!

AJ,

I loved the blog. I have to admit, I have still never seen any porn. I wouldn't mind some realism, but I just don't think I would like to read about the rough stuff. I like my Romance and Erotic Romance at least slightly cleaned up and idealized.

Now as to talking about some prep and reality in a book, I wouldn't mind if someone is doing a shower scene:
A character mentions that they want to take care of some business before their SO joins them,
Or tells them to give them a few minutes before they come in,
Or even says, honey let me clean/freshen up a little bit before we start anything, it’s been a long day.

I think sugar coating or glossing over the realities would be a good thing instead of just ignoring their existence.

Susie, my sweet Susie, thanks for stopping by. I agree with you about showering etc. Good point!
Anna, thank you too, for stopping by.

Hey AJ,

Do readers want to read it? I don't think so. They want the fun, the romance and the drama that goes along with hot sex, gay or straight.

Actually, I may be one of the few who appreciates verisimilitude in my m/m erotica. I can get all that girly romance stuff from my m/f romances. Some of my favorite m/m stories included all the unpleasant details of gay sex and I appreciated it b/c frankly I'll never know what it's like to have gay sex and reading gay erotica is as close as I'll ever come (no pun intended!). So I say bring in the nasty, real-life bits!

I still don't understand how someone can just be gay for pay? Would they not have to enjoy gay sex to some degree for it to even work/look believable?
Do gay actors have problems working with gay4pay actors?

Is an accurate depiction of a gay sex scene a lot different than the romanticised one? As a reader even tho I get bored with sugar coating would I really want total accuracy?

This was a great post, really made me think ...learned a few things too:)
