What is reality?

One can't help but stumble onto one or another reality show when they turn on the television.

I remember when Survivor first hit the air, it was huge and the show that started the whole reality TV craze.

Now you see way too many of these so called reality TV shows and I think it has put a damper on how much people watch them. Some shows are just weird and it makes you think people were bored when they came up with the whole idea.

More and more people are opening the doors to their private lives and family just to make money. Is there a point when one can say this is too much.

A part of me thinks it is like a sideshow or something. Peoples lives are getting ruined and families and marriages are falling apart because fame gets to the people involved.

Reality TV use to be shows are competition, fun and entertainment. Now it has turned into a way to make fast cash.

What do you think about all of the reality TV shows out there? Is the fame worth breaking up families and ruining lives?

I was never able to get into any of the 'reality' shows, which face it, are about as real as my imaginary childhood friend. I watched about 10 minutes of the first Survivor and two things struck me even then -- this is not how real people stranded anywhere would act if they had any hope of surviving and it wasn't fun or games -- it was an ode ot greed and making people look ridiculous and humiliating people, sort of like the other craze for home made videos showing people almost killing themselves doing stupid stunts. I don't understand the need to make people do stupid things so we can laugh at them -- is it to make us feel superior? Maybe I'm just a grumpy old coot, but I don't get it. But I sure don't watch them.

I wateched Survivor when it first came out but then after that I never got into the whole thing. I think now it is anything for fast cash, even if it makes you look bad or hurt you in the end.

Hi Savannah!

I don't watch much reality TV. I can't stand the bickering. Now, my hubby and I do have a guilty pleasure and that was Bret Michaels and Rock of Love on VH1. We called it our "trash TV." The show was like a train wreck and yet, oddly addictive. I think I might have watched the first season of the Bachelor and then never again. I did like to watch Jon and Kate Plus 8, but I had a hard time with how mean she could be to her hubby.

I guess with reality TV, you never know what you're going to get. I know everyone was thinking it would fade away and yet- it's still here! Good grief! I wish it would disappear like Pepsi Clear (remember that?!). LOL

We have a reality show over here and the "star" is sharing her family problems, relationship problems and addiction problems with us all. It makes me sad to think that some people need to live their lives in front of us all in this way. Some shows are good fun, but when they get to a certain point, I do think to myself that the "stars" need to act with some dignity and do their living away from the cameras and behind closed doors.

I think that there are things that should stay a secret, the whole world does not need to know everything...You open your life and there is no privacy....Why would you want to do that...

The only reality show that I watch are Gene Simmons family jewels and Ace of Cakes on the food networks.
But I can't understand any of the hype that all reality tv brings. Like PA Brown said:"I was never able to get into any of the 'reality' shows, which face it, are about as real as my imaginary childhood friend."
i don't understand the need to show off, to sleep around, to backstab everyone... I was asked once by a coworker why I didn't watch reality tv, I said I couldn't stand it and she said "but it's real life." Let's just say that if I ever acted like that in my real life my parents would have disowned me. LOL!
I miss the days of good Tv series and not having to watch the tragedies of Lohan, Hilton, spears and Speidie.

The cooking shows are great, you get to see the person do their craft...

I think people crave for this drama and crazyness and that is why there are more and more shows being made..

I will admit that have been sucked into several seasons of Survivor in the past, as well as an early season or two of the Osbournes. I'm not proud of it.

With that said, it really is a shame that people reduce themselves to the levels seen on many reality television shows, just for money. Interpersonal relationships are more valuable than that, IMHO.

Lisa, some reality shows are not bad...Cooking ones, and stuff like that but then you get the ones that are crazy and too much....

I first watched reality tv when Big Brother came out. I was enthralled and disgusted at the same time and watched the whole season.

I haven't watched it since and it is into its 8-9 season? I do watch Gene Simmons, love that man! He could sell ice cream to an Eskimo as the saying goes. Great post girl!

Savannah, this is such a good blog. It's soo true. I believe reality tv shows DO ruin family lives! Example Jon and Kate plus 8. I believe they're exposing they're children WAY too much. Those poor kids. I don't feel sorry for Kate or Jon. Those kids are the ones that are paying in the hurt department. Great blog Savannah!
