What's so great about sex?

I'm EM Lynley, author of m/m erotic romance, and brand new Midnight Seductions author. I agonized over my first blog post here, and I thought what's the one thing that everyone here is interested in? SEX, of course!

You know what you like about sex, it feels so damn good, right? But did you know that in addition, there are lots of health benefits from having sex? There are. Lots of them. So every time you have sex, you are getting healthier!

Here are just a few of them. [Source: WebMD article]

1. Sex Relieves Stress
A big health benefit of sex is lower blood pressure and overall stress reduction, according to researchers from Scotland who reported their findings in the journal Biological Psychology. Dozens of men and women kept records of their sexual activity. Then the researchers subjected them to stressful situations and measured their blood pressure response to stress. Those who had intercourse had better responses to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained.

2. Sex Boosts Immunity
Good sexual health may mean better physical health. Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections.

3. Sex Burns Calories
Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound like much, but it adds up: 42 half-hour sessions will burn 3,570 calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop that pound in 21 hour-long sessions.

4. Sex Reduces Pain
As the hormone oxytocin surges, endorphins increase, and pain declines. So if your headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms seem to improve after sex, you can thank those higher oxytocin levels.

5. Sex Helps You Sleep Better
The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep, according to research. Getting enough sleep has been linked with a host of other good things, such as maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure. Something to think about, especially if you've been wondering why your guy can be active one minute and snoring the next.

In the event you can't get as much sex you'd like, I believe that reading about can make you feel just about as good. If you like reading m/m erotic romance—or you're curious about what make it so damn HOT—come and check out my website for lots of excerpts! I'm also on LiveJournal, Facebook and MySpace.

Just a bit about me before I go:

EM Lynley works in the wine industry, though she'd rather be writing hot, sexy man-on-man action. She spent 15 years as an economist and financial analyst, including a year as a White House Staff Economist, but only because all the intern positions were filled. Tired of boring herself and others with dry business reports and articles, her creative muse is back and naughtier than ever. She has lived and worked in London, Tokyo and Washington, D.C., but the San Francisco Bay Area is home for now. She even spent a year traveling the world on her own, and has she got stories to share about that!

Questions for you: Going forward, what would you like me to write about here? Updates on writing? Stories from my year traveling the world? Trends in erotic romance? Something else?

Thanks, Isabel! And I certainly know a lot of great books to read to get all those health benefits!

Even writing about sex makes me feel better! ;)

Great job, Em! *claps* It was an interesting post. Although, I'm thinking the 21 hour sessions are the better way to go. Or even 10.5 two hour sessions. LOL.

In the future, I'd be interested in hearing your take on sexuality and sex products in the countries you've visited. It might be fun to compare.

Sex definitely helps you lose weight. When I first met the man who is now my husband, we had lots of sex every single day (after that couple of months waiting period was up) and I dropped about thirty pounds in a few months. I couldn't tell anyone my secret! LOL...of course, now we've been together seven years so our sex life has dropped down considerably since we have to get out of bed sometime and deal with all these children and work and the weight is creeping back up.

Writing about sex is great foreplay!

When I was researching KAMA SUTRA positions, my DH was a great sport in helping out with the 64 positions that I chose to write aobut.

The nice thing about sex is that it can bring you a special closeness as you explore new positions, techniques, and sensations. A sense of humor is the key for all sex though. Laughing and sex go hand in hand in my little world!

And for any prudes reading this:

You are here reading this because your parents had sex!! lol

Angela,
Interesting topics...I'll probably talk a bit about sex in Japan, though it gets into a few topics that bother me, but it was definitely interesting... I lived there for 5 years, so there are plenty of interesting stories! ;D

Great post! Good to know what great shape I could be in if I wasn't . . . well . . . single.

Sephera,
LMAO at your comments! How much weight did BF lose? Sounds like you probably skipped a lot of meals, too! How nice he helps you out with the research. Which book were you writing with the Kama Sutra research?

And no prudes around here as far as I can tell!

Elle,
Yup, that is the one thing that reading about sex (or masturbating) won't provide!

If only all those guys out there knew how sexy you really are, you wouldn't be single!

Great post, EM, welcome to the Midnight Seductions blog! No need for single folks not to reap the benefits too - one of our favorite reviewer comments was a reaction to our very first published book: "don't read this book without either a partner or a bucket of toys close at hand."

Future blogs? I'd love to hear more about the year you spent traveling the world. I'll bet you did some wonderful research, hope to see it in future books of yours!

Adriana,
Hi and thanks for the warm welcome! I love that comment about the reaction to the book. That's what I like to hear! I get comments like that from some male beta readers, and I know I am getting it right!

Definitely will blog about the trip. One of my current wips takes a lot from the time I spent in Thailand. It should be in editing by my next blog, so I will definitely mention it!

Now I know why I need to be having sex. Did you happen to find an article on giving ones self permission to do it without any thought to what happens after. lol

I took this list to my doctor and he wrote me a prescription!
