Lately, I've noticed several trends in the erotic romance world that leave me scratching my head, or in the case of the trend I'm going to discuss today, extremely annoyed.
Others may disagree with my opinions. If so, I'd love to hear what you like about the trend, so I can get some insight into why it seems to be so popular.
Baffling Trend #1: The m/m/f menage made up of a committed gay couple + some chick
Here's the setup--Boy meets boy. Boys are together in gay domestic bliss. One (or both) of the boys suddenly decide what they need to make them complete is a woman...
W...T...F????? This does not compute.
Now don't get me wrong, I like menage stories. I like them when the boys touch, and when they don't. I like them when they involve two women and a man. It's all good.
BUT, it makes absolutely no sense to me when the author sets a couple of guys up as gay and then has them suddenly decide they need a woman. Why would a committed gay couple do that? I don't suddenly feel that my hubby and I need to add a woman to our relationship to make it complete, because that's not the way I swing.
I understand that menage is hot right now, and readers seem to like m/m/f better than other kinds, but couldn't the two guys be friends, or bisexual even, rather than being gay? Yeah, the stories are fiction, but come on. I can't suspend disbelief quite that much.
Am I the only one that thinks this is weird? I'd love to hear everyone's opinions on the issue.

Well, it just means that at least one partner in that committed gay relationship is bi.
I just wrote a menage that involved m/m/f, but the two guys were basically bi. There was no committed relationship in anyway.
Seems like I saw a shifter story somewhere the other day on a group that had to males/wolves, who were somehow intended to become a trio to complete their order/race/being. I don't know.
We've got quads and all kinds of stuff. I sometimes wonder what peeps will come up with next. I'm so stuck in missionary position in my honest-to-god life that it all makes me go "hmmm..." even though I'm writing it. lol
To tell you the truth, I never thought of it. I guess when I read about the gay couple I assume they aren't gay they are bi even if it isn't spelled out. Hmm...I'll have to think on this more. I'm writing an m/m/f where the guys are a couple. I'll have to go back and see if I say they are bi anywhere.
Hmmm, that does make you wonder. I've never read one of these. Usually it's the m/f couple who wants to spice up their relationship with her hot friend or his.
Although I'm working on a short were a lesbian couple, but I point out there bi not just gay. And they also have a history of doing this type of thing. It's not a new thing. :)
I've noticed this trend too, and have read some excerpts from some of the books, but I haven't read a m/m/f book in its entirety yet. I'll have to check one out and see how it sits with me. Usually though, I can suspend disbelief of just about anything, if the author hooks me with the characters.

I just noticed this. I know it's considered a trend, yet at least at the publishers I've noticed, I don't see those selling as well as the straight guys with one woman.
I think menage is just selling so well right now that some authors/publishers are letting that trend continue. There's nothing wrong with any mix of people but the story needs to flow and be believable no matter the sexuality of the characters.

I write both M/M and M/F/M. No where in any of my stories will you find a gay couple needing either a female or a male to complete them.
I have to dispute this blog only because I wrote my best selling novel "My Hawaiian Song of Love" based on a true story of an Australian woman who was invited into a gay partnership. I blogged about it heere last year.
It can and DOES happen.
Horses for courses, hon!
The question you have to ask is:
Are they SURE they're gay? Like Carson Kressely gay or like Ricky Martin gay? Caues there's a difference.
I have one story (Stalker: Dub Mix) that has a wolf who is dedicedly straight but is forced to fuck a gay faerie despite his desire to NOT touch a man. Course I pushed boundaries here...
