What is she talking about, I hear you ask.
Sex and the City, of course!
For six seasons, millions of women around the world tuned into this show, all desperate to join in on the antics of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. The show's success was phenomenal, something the movie's ticket sales will prove no doubt.
So why the hell is it so popular? I was trying to work it out with a couple of my girlfriends the other day. We were all addicted to the show when it was on, and we still watch the re-runs. So what makes it so addictive? Is it the sex? The men? The fashion? The glamor?
Maybe it's all of those things. But the main reason we loved the show, as decided by me and my two best friends, is how it conveys the relationships between women, and how important friendship is in the dating game.
If you watch this show, you know how the relationships between the four main stars make the show sparkle. Each of them is so individual, yet they work together. They have a bond that no man can shake. They talk about things that no man would ever get to hear. Their friendship is solid and always comes first.
I think that's why I love to include a best friend to my heroine in my books. If a heroine has a girlfriend, we get to see an entirely different side to her character than if we only saw the heroine with her hero. Women are different with other women than they are with men. And I like to get that insight in my books. It makes for a more rounded character IMHO.
That's why in Power, my upcoming release from Cobblestone Press, we get to meet Shelly, my heroine's best friend. Shelly appears for only two brief conversations in the book, but it's still enough to give us a better picture of Bryanne (the heroine) and her personality.
So how important is female friendship to you? Do you like to meet the heroine's best friend in the books you read?
And are you going to see the movie? Have you seen it already? Who's your favorite character?
Signing off as a Sex-and-the-City-freak :)

Great blog, couldn't agree more! The power of a group of women friends can never be overstated, and that's part of what I loved about the series, too. Can't wait for the movie!

Considering my best friend is a woman, my two dominants are women...in fact I only have two or three real male friends. And one of them is gay, the another is bi!
Great blog!
