On April Fools' Day, the blog Smart Bitches, Trashy Books did a joke blog claiming that Ellora's Cave was releasing a new line of were-duck erotica. (See it here: http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/aprilfools08/index.html)
Ellora's Cave's Redlines and Deadlines blog came back with a list of 13 types of shifters they would like to see. The full list (with explanations) is here: http://redlinesanddeadlines.blogspot.com/2008/04/more-arms-to-hold-you.html, and it's hilarious! Their list included such odd creatures as the were-kiwi, were-seahorse, were-whale, and were-Corgi.
Wolves have been done. Big cats of various types are gaining popularity. I've even seen were-horses, dolphins, bears, and one octopus-shifter story.
My question to all of you is what kind of shifters would you like to see, or see more of? Do you still love werewolves, or would you rather see a new type of shifter?

Cassandra, although I love all the weres, wolves and tigers are my faves. BUT after reading Nina Bangs book with the Sabre Tooth I must admit that perhaps something more on the order of that or my all-time love-DRAGONS- would be lovely. I know a few dragons have been done, but not as a series and not very realistically. Michael Barnette and Bells is probably one of the best examples of it being done well (love Bells). And contrary to unpopularity I think one with an anaconda or python shifter would be great! Think of the limitless possibilities. But again, just my opinion.
I don't really like shape shifter stories. Although I read one from Caitlyn Hunter who has a series coming out with Dreamspell very oon. It's based on an old Cherokee legend and she brings it to life with such sensuality and realism, I was just overwhelmed by what little I read. She uses a bear and an eagle I know for sure in that series.
For me I think whatever creature is used it would need to share the same strong, positive connotations I see in the Alpha Male. So lions, tigers, bears, oh my! lol...
No fish or snakes for me. No dogs, squirrels, rats, ducks or squids!
Great blog, Cassandra. Good topic.
What, Tess? No squid? *Tosses were-squid WIP into trash*
Just kidding! You're right, some animals would be so not sexy as shifters.
Ruth--A dragon shifter series would be awesome if done well! I have seen a lot of books with dragons as secondary characters, but not too many with dragons in the lead roles. As for snake shifters, CT Adams and Cathy Clamp's Sazi series has one, although he is not a main character. (He is pretty cool though!)
Hmm, seems to me Ann Cory did a fox once, Night of the Nogitsune, is that book still available?? Foxes are sexy! Big cats aren't too bad, either - not to mention great characters like batboy and the wolfman *grin* for example!

The author that normally comes into my mind about all that is Sherrilyn Kenyon, she has a pretty extensive series based on Greek mythology mixed with the modern element in her Dark Hunter series. Its pretty cool.
I have read about Were-wolves, cats, dogs, dragons, bears, and a few others from what I can remember.
Does the choice of animal diminish the were-ness factor? Because you think jellyfish, and well its funny but...jellyfish are pretty deadly. So...hmmm....were-jellies? Makes you wonder if there is a were-bunny out there somewhere.
Cool blog Cassandra
Does anyone remember the movie Ladyhawke. That's my idea of a shapeshifter love story.
Dee
Anyone remember the princess from He-Man? wasn't that a shifter? She sure was hot when I was 8...
oh yah that was funny.....
I still love my wolves and big cats.....you can't go wrong
