Contests…love ‘em or leave ‘em?

What inspires you to enter a contest? If the prize is super great?
Or do you never enter, no matter the value?

Contests have long been used as a means to collect addresses for direct mail and since the advent of the internet, for direct email. To enter some contests, you must submit a code from a product or a box top. Does buying a product to enter make you less inclined even though the chances of winning are greater?

What prizes interest you most, particularily in an author sponsored contest?

I asked a member of Midnight Seductions Yahoo group about this. Jambrea, replied, “Well...I love gift certs because those are fun to spend. If it is a print book, I LOVE to have those autographed. I also like ebooks. I enjoy getting things mailed to me so any kind of surprise is good for me because I love presents. Heck...why don't I just say it...I LOVE it all!!!”

On that note, there are two contests on my website this month:

I used to have contests all the time, and offered nice prizes too. But I found only a handful of people would actually play so I cut back.

Now I have a monthly surprise giveaway on my blog. All anyone has to do for a chance to win is leave a comment on one of my posts. The last Saturday of the month I pick one winner.

I don't list the prize until I think they've received it. Otherwise it wouldn't be a surprise.

HEY MC!
LOVE THE SIMPLE CONTESTS WHERE I HAVE A CHANCE AT WINNING. DUE TO MY DOUBLE STROKE MY REASONING SKILLS ARE WHACK, PLUS IT'S HARD TO WRITE WITH ONLY ONE HAND.

I have to agree with Hotcha here. I don't want to have to read an excerpt or 'find' something when I enter a contest. I think it should be easy. Show up to a chat or offer insight on a reader question.
